Support and direction for lasting change

Trail Talk therapy in Park City · Telehealth

I'm an experienced clinical mental health counselor, and I offer therapy two ways: in person on nearby hiking trails, and by telehealth. I work with adults facing anxiety, depression, ADHD and life transitions, and with anyone who wants more happiness and fulfillment in their life.

What I help with

I work with people struggling with anxiety, depression and ADHD, with transitions and life changes, and with relationships. I also work with people who simply want more happiness and self-actualization for themselves.

Men often find it easier to talk side by side on a trail than face to face in an office. If that's you, you're in the right place.

“There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.”

Once you understand that, you can start learning the tools to manage your emotions and create your own happiness from the inside out, whatever your situation. Come join me on this journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment.

About Rowlie

I've been in practice for 39 years. I earned my master's in Educational Psychology, Counseling, at the University of Utah in 1986, and I'm licensed in Utah and Colorado.

A lot of my life has been spent outdoors. I've worked as an adventure guide and in experiential and outdoor education, coached and taught skiing as a PSIA-certified instructor, and served on ski patrol and as an EMT. That's where Trail Talk comes from.

I'm married and a father of four.

My experience, training and deep sense of compassion help me give clients the support and direction they need.

How we start

In our first sessions we'll look closely at what brought you here, make a plan together for addressing it, and start building the tools you need to reach your goals.

Much of my work draws on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We'll look at how your thoughts shape your emotions and experience, and I'll help you learn to push back against the ones that work against you, so that you feel better and act differently.

I also draw on DBT, solution-focused, experiential and humanistic approaches, and coaching.

Why the trail

Many people find it easier to think, and to say hard things, when they're moving and side by side rather than sitting across a room. Being outside, moving at an easy pace, can take some of the pressure off.

I've spent a lifetime outdoors as an adventure guide, outdoor educator, ski patroller and EMT. You'll be in experienced hands on the trail.

Questions people ask

None of them are silly, and asking any of them doesn't commit you to anything.

Will anyone hear us?
The trails and times are chosen so that nothing you say is in anyone else's earshot. If a stretch is busy, we stop talking until it isn't.
Where do we meet?
At a trailhead near Park City, at an agreed time. You'll have the exact spot before your first walk. [Is the first session in an office or on the trail?]
How far and how fast do we walk?
You set the pace, and slow is welcome. [Distance per session.] This isn't exercise with a therapist attached. The walking is there to make the talking easier.
What if the weather turns?
If it's too wet, too cold or the trail isn't safe, we switch to telehealth for that session, and you'll know before you leave the house. [Confirm, and what happens in winter.]
Do we ever meet indoors?
[His answer: office, or telehealth only?]
Is it real therapy?
It's the same licensed work and the same confidentiality. The room is just outdoors.
